Dear Sir,

I would like to bring to the Environment and Sustainability  committee’s attention the potential for a lox carbon generating station at Trawsfynydd Nuclear decommissioning site in North Wales. The site currently employs around 450 staff with a diverse range of skills for work within the nuclear industry.

We are currently in an accelerated decommissioning programme with a completion date of December 2016. At that time it is estimated that there will be less than 12 people working at the site with an expectation that this would be Zero around 2018.

Trawsfynydd power station successfully generated electricity to the National Grid for over 40 years and during that time it served the local community well in terms of providing good long term well paid jobs for the area. In 1993 the site was closed and in 1994 the site began defueling and decommissioning.

Following the current phase of decommissioning there are no plans in place to offer any further employment opportunities at the location. This would be of detriment to the local community and North Wales.

The site at Trawsfynydd has a lot to offer prospective power generating companies in terms :-

A skilled, highly qualified an experienced workforce who have been proven in operating and decommissioning a nuclear power station.

A large secure footprint for a new power generator.

An abundant supply of cooling water from the lake .

A 400Kv and 275Kv national grid connection with sub station adjacent to the site.

Close proximity to Universities and technical colleges.

The site has good road links as it is just off the main A470 trunk road.

I would like to inform the committee that the Trade union representatives at the Trawsfynydd site would

if necessary be available to provide oral evidence if invited.

If there is any other information that you require to help make this happen please do not hesitate in contacting me.

Regards,  Rory Trappe, Prospect union representative, Trawsfynydd Decommissioning site.
